Blossoms in Your Briefs

Is there anything more frustrating than trying to figure out why a plant will not grow or bloom after lavishing hours and hours across many weeks? Borrowing from the real estate rule book, the three most important considerations for planning a gardening: location, location, location. Plants simply will not prosper if they are located in an area that is not in harmony with their nature, no matter how much the gardener does to conterract the effects of a bad spot. Gardeners become respectable only when they accept this natural law. After years I have achieved this modest status, even though I still try to round the corners on the rules. Lately though, something new has caught my attention: Container gardening and the miracle of adult diapers.

A year or two ago, I installed some beautiful open-wire flower boxes under the windows of my house. Into these I planted a stunning collection of bloomers and trailing foliage. Immediately, I went into full combat with the afternoon sun. The little instructions that came with these plants advised that direct sunlight would be okay, but despite being placed into the best potting soil for this problem, it was clear that I was going to lose this battle. I simply could not keep up with the watering requirements with such a high and dry location. I needed to find a way to conserve water in the soil or there was never going to be more than flat, dead grass and dry twigs under these windows of mine.

Cathartically, I took the window boxes down, emptied them out and started over. The thick open wire flower boxes came with a coco matting that I re-installed. I lined this matting with adult diapers, their business-sides facing up (the sides that do all the absorbing). Then I filled in with soil and plants, hung them back up under my windows and watered them.

Adult diapers are filled with superabsorbent polymer (SAP) which can absorb as much as 30 times its own weight in fluid. It is non-toxic and it is a modern marvel. In my window boxes, the polymer did its job very well; absorbing water when it rained, these little crystals gave up their water at the perfect rate to keep the soil in my flower boxes moist and fertile.

It was a friend of mine that put me onto this idea. I do not know the origins of the idea, but I can’t help but wonder at the odd connection between diapers and gardens: You know, the manure thing.

Have a good summer.

Health care, or healthcare, whichever expression you prefer, is the prevention, intervention and management of illness using the facilities offered by the medical, nursing and allied health professions. The World Health Organizations definition is a little different and refers more to the prevention of illness and facilities to promote this, in addition to treatment that should be available to a single person as well as a whole population. Working to together this way, the whole medical community would fall under the expression healthcare system.

The term health care has not always been used though and prior to this is it was often just referred to medicine or the health sector but this was used more by English speaking nations. Around the world today, most nations have a system in place to ensure that everyone receives healthcare irrespective of their social standing or financial situation. This first started in the United Kingdom a few years after the end of World War 2 in 1948, and became the first health care service set up and run by a administration.

In Italy, they have a system that works by making everyone pay into a government funded insurance scheme which The WHO consider the second best healthcare system in the world. Canada and Australia have both begun similar systems and have been running since 19.6 and the 1970’s respectively both going by the name of Medicare. These systems are almost opposite to the systems currently provided in American and South Africa although there are huge changes taking place in the system used by South Africa. health care professionals are dedicated to preventing illness and disease principally, but also to treat and protect the long expression health of their patients.

Whether you use the phrase healthcare industry or not, it is still one of the fastest growing around the world with an average cost of 10 percent of gross domestic product it also plays a large part in the economy of any country. Although in 2003 the healthcare costs paid to across the entire healthcare system, consumed 15.3 percent of the GDP of America, the largest of any country in the world and is expected to reach almost twenty percent of GDP by 2016.

Currently in the The United States over one hundred eighty million citizens are looking for healthcare and it will be no surprise to learn that it is top of all concerns for those in and seeking employment. The costs of health care in The United States have risen so much that General Motors had looked at filing bankruptcy due to the increasing health care costs wearing down its auto manufacturing division. Luckily it didn’t happen after some concessions and compromises made with the unions but it does show how something like this can have an effect on even the largest of companies.

The American healthcare system costs a great deal to employers but it is the number one thing that potential employees look for in an employer and has seen many shifts in how people view working for any given company. Maybe it is time healthcare was looked at in a different way and perhaps called health preservation with an accent on fitness and health to ease the need for a top heavy health care system which is becoming a worldwide problem.

Not too long ago, my spouse spent a Sunday afternoon installing window boxes on the front of our house. I quickly filled these well-drained boxes with perfect soil and a beautiful assortment of blossoming flowers. It took me about 3 days to realize that I was engaged in conflict with the relentless afternoon sun. No mortal could posible keep up with the watering that these wndow boxes demanded. They were high and dry and even though the flowers were clearly designated for direct sunlight, I was never going to have more than dry thatch outside my windows unless I came up with a way to manage the humidity of the soil in these boxes.

Cathartically, I took the window boxes down, emptied them out and started over. The thick open wire flower boxes came with a coco matting that I re-installed. In Italy, they have a system that works by making everyone pay into a administration funded insurance scheme which The World Health Organization consider the second best healthcare system in the world. Two other systems like that in Italy, both using the name Medicare, one in Australia and the other in Canada were started between the late 1960’s and the early 1980’s. Universal health care contrasts to the systems like healthcare in America or South Africa, though South Africa is one of the many nations attempting health care reform. people who work in healthcare include all professionals whose job it is to preserve life, treat and cure illness and try to improve the health of people. The collective expression for this is the health care industry but the word industry may not necessarily be the best one to use.

Worldwide, over recent decades, there has been a huge increase in the amount of money spent on health care and it is now one of the fastest growing sectors in every developed country with an average cost of 10 percent of the gross domestic product. Rain and Convertibles

For this story to make sense, you need to know that my employer sells adult diapers. So it’s not surprising that I have a few packs of these in my house. I almost always have a pack or two in my car too, because the company donates supplies to local medical clinics and homeless shelters and it is my job to do the deliveries. Now here’s my story:

So, a few weeks ago my little brother somehow managed to borrow our father’s most prized possession for a Sunday afternoon: a 1969 Chevy Camaro convertible in mint condition. This car is normally kept under a dust cover in the side of Dad’s garage that almost never gets opened up. I think my brother got the car because he told Dad that he was taking his new girlfriend out and I know that this is (finally) a girl that Dad likes. My brother and his girlfriend came over to our house and we all piled into our minivan for a fun drive. But little bro’ left the top down on the Camaro and while we were gone a tropical thunderstorm matured right over our neighborhood and turned that spotless muscle car into a gorgeous rain barrel. When we returned and peered inside, our worst fears were realized: There was over 4 inches of rain inside that car. We were all paralyzed until my cell phone rang: It was Dad calling and he was on his way over for dinner. We had ten minutes to get that car clean and dry.

My brother started scooping water with one of my daughter’s little beach pails when I realized that I had something better: Adult Diapers! I opened up a pack that I had in the trunk of my car and immersed them one-by-one into the small lake at the bottom of the vehicle. Magic! For those of you who don’t know, disposable adult diapers are filled with a special polymer that can absorb up to thirty times its own weight in water. Seeing it in action is breath-taking. The rate of absorption is absolutely jaw-dropping. Eight adult diapers are all it took to soak up almost all that water. Paper towels took care of the last little bit and three different hair dryers operated by three different people finished it up nicely, just before Dad arrived. Dad is still none the wiser concerning this incident, I think.

So if you own a convertible, keep your top up when traveling through southern states. And if you want to prepare for the worst that can happen, keep a few adult diapers tucked away in the trunk or luggage compartment. If your wife or girlfriend finds these panties in your car, you’ll have a good story to tell.

My spouse is always telling me to Bloom where you are planted. This is good advice for me and as an amateur gardener; I wish I could pass this tip along to my plants. Alas, plant life will refuse to flourish if not placed in an area that is conducive to its temperament - regardless of subsequent cajoling and urging by the gardener. Acceptance of this basic ground rule is an indicator for promotion of the greenhorn gardener to the status of adequate. It has taken me many seasons to get here and even still, I seek to prune the rule. Recently though, I have discovered the world of container gardening and the marvel of adult diapers. Yup, adult diapers.

Sometimes gardeners and writers have to start over and that’s what I did. I overturned the boxes and started fresh. This time, I unfolded some adult diapers and spread them all over the inside of the window boxes with their absorbent sides facing into the boxes. I re-filled the boxes with new soil and flowers, hung them back up and gave them a good watering.

Adult diapers are a modern miracle. They aren’t just overstuffed with shreds of paper towels; they are strategically filled with crystals of a special polymer called SAP which can absorb up to thirty times its own weight in fluid. I can report that these little crystals did their job perfectly. Rainwater was absorbed by the diapers and then gradually released back into the soil, keeping the soil at consistent, ideal moisture levels. Oh yeah, I should also mention, this polymer is non-toxic.

Okay, Im not the one who discovered this. My best friend told me about it and frankly I do not know who first came up with this idea. Diapers and gardens might seem an odd match at first, but certainly both take care of manure very well.

Enjoy!

The Growing Importance Of The Healthcare Industry

Health care is the general term used for the entire sphere of prevention, treatment and cure of sickness and disease using the facilities of medical experts and resources. Still, The WHO believes the meaning should also incorporate all related industries and be a service available to everyone irrespective of who they, which means people as well as whole groups of people. Jointly, this provision of medical services would be known as a healthcare system.

Early before the phrase health care was common, the English speaking nations called it just plain medicine or more commonly the health sector but it still meant the provision of a health service to treat and cure sickness and disease. Most developed and even developing countries have a system of health care for all to cater for those who cannot pay. Of course the first country wide healthcare service begun in the UK in 1948 and was called The National Health Service being the first to be organized and funded by the administration.

According to The World Health Organization, a good alternative to this system is that in Italy where insurance for health is a compulsory but is a government funded service and possibly the second best around the world. Other examples are Medicare in Australia, established in the 1970s by the Labor administration, and by the same name Medicare in Canada, established between almost twenty and 1984. The main countries that do not support this universal healthcare service are America and South Africa, although they are making reforms to their health service. health care professionals are dedicated to preventing illness and disease primarily, but also to treat and protect the long term health of their patients.

Worldwide, over recent decades, there has been a huge increase in the amount of money spent on health care and it is now one of the fastest growing sectors in every developed country with an average cost of 10 percent of the gross domestic product. In The USA there are one hundred eighty million Americans who want health care and a recent study showed that it was the number one concern of those seeking work. The steep increases in the health care system in America almost contributed to the bankruptcy of the giant car manufacturer General motors. Luckily, negotiations between the Union and GM management made a deal to reduce some of the benefits but keep operating as usual but the were force to sell off their under performing finance arm GMAC.

The American healthcare system costs a great deal to employers but it is the number one thing that potential employees look for in an employer and has seen many shifts in how people view working for any given company.
